Back on February 26th, 2024, a Casting Director emailed me to let me know that the Director of some movie named The Substance loved my voice-over audition and wanted to book me as the main "voice on the telephone" for the film. I have never been in a feature film, so I agreed. I had no idea what the film was about, which actors were in it, or who the Director was. I just figured it would be fun to do a session at in the ADR studios at Warner Brothers in Burbank, where the voice-over tracks for some of the biggest movies in history have been recorded. You know, another thing to add to my IMDB and post on my website. One more thing for my mom to post on her Facebook.
Because the Director was in France, they mentioned that the VO session was going to have to start around 600-700am Pacific time. And, as a voice actor, you need to be awake for a couple of hours before a session to be fully ready. This meant I probably needed to wake up around 300-400am. As a night owl, this probably meant I was going to be pulling an all-nighter.
But, I was down for it.
One more crazy LA story to add to my memoir.
Once I googled the movie was Directed by Coralie Fargeat and figured out Demi Moore and Dennis Quaid were attached, I was jacked. But, I didn't tell anyone, because these types of things have a way of not working out. And, you don't want 60 people asking about that movie you were supposed to be in.
As the days past and my agent went back and forth, I kept stressing about which night I was going to have to go without sleeping, and if this meant I needed to cancel my upcoming flight to Tampa to visit my family. My agent assured me they would just find a studio in Tampa/Orlando and make it work.
So, I waited.
A week went by and I had not heard anything.
I was nervous every night that some studio was going to call my phone at 5:00am and ask if I was planning to make it to the session on time.
Day after day and week after week, I kept checking in with my agent and he told me production was pushing it back another week. Then, 2 weeks. Then one more week.
Then, my agent called me and told me production contacted him to let us both know they no longer needed me for the film. I assumed it was because they had decided to use A.I.
As it would turn out, they simply cast another actor.
But, thems the breaks.
Keep it pushing.
Congratulations to everyone involved with The Substance for the movie.
It is so moving!
Here is the email that kicked it all off...almost.

And, stream the trailer for The Substance here:
I would have loved an oscar.
I'll have to settle for watching from my house...7.3 miles from Dolby Theater.
And, for making the best baseball walkup intro announcements in the World.
